From late 2015 surveys are being carried out in areas of the Vallombrosa Forest where severe windthrow damages were recorded after a storm in the month of March of the same year. The objective of these surveys is both to assess ecological/economic consequences related to the windthrown trees (still lying on the forest ground), and suggest actions to rationally remove them, when necessary. Two representative areas were chosen for the samplings. In each area samplings included both dead and surviving silver fir trees, among those uprooted by the wind. For each tree the presence/absence of bark beetles was ascertained along the entire length of the trunk. The data gathered led to two main logistic options regarding the removal of windthrown firs: 1) uprooted trees with part of their root system still active remain prone to pest colonization for a long period of time, so they should be promptly removed; 2) dead trees (both uprooted and broken) could be removed later as their fast-drying wood tissues soon became unsuitable for bark beetle colonization. Finally, some hypothesis regarding the management of these drastically changed areas are discussed, stressing the role of ungulate fauna.
