An exploratory study on the productivity and efficiency of Spanish and Italian wineries

The objective of the paper is to estimate the total change in productivity, broken down into efficiency change and technical change, comparing Italian and Spanish winery sectors. The methodology used is based on the estimation of the Malmquist productivity index for a sample of Spanish and Italian wineries between 2005 and 2013. The results show very low efficiency levels for the wineries under study: Spanish and Italian wineries show a decrease in their average annual productivity for the period analysed. The success of these wineries is underpinned on taking actions based on the results of the efficiency and productivity analysis. These results will guide the wineries to improve their competitiveness in the global market.
