Abstract

The island of Rhodes, thanks to its geographical position, has always been a strategic point for the trade routes between East and West. The city of Rhodes in the Hellenistic period was already equipped with defensive walls. Since 1309 the St. John Hospitallers Knights, who had gained good experience in the construction of fortifications in the Holy Land, extended the existing Byzantine walls. Today the castle of Rhodes is characterized by a defensive wall around the old town that consists mostly of an Italian fortification, that is composed of an embankment covered with stone ramparts, ditch, counterscarp and glacis, while the fortification overlooking the port is a simple retaining wall battlements; on the piers are placed towers and strong defense.
