Italian studies on Protestantism between the 19th and 20th century considered the Renaissance and the Reformation as two moments of a unitary process, which aimed at establishing modernity, setting the biginning of the Italian crisis for the year of Giordano Bruno's execution. The question evolved from being considered as the "Reformation in Italy" to the "Italian Reformation". Thus it was identified as a movement with a specific and autonomous character from the rest of the Reformation and the failure of the Reformation in Italy was explained by the violent repression of the Inquisition. In such cultural context the idea of a conceptual connection between the Reformation and the establishment of a more evolved political and economic model was born. The scholars focused on the interpretative key of the "failed Reforrmation". From this perspective Italy was perceived as remained anchored on backward positions because of the Papal tyranny, while in all the nations where the Reformation had prevailed, the metaphoric chains of backwardness had been broken in favour of a path of development and civilization. The religion's choiice of Italian was interpreted as a moral and economical question as well; so the "failed Reformation" in Italy become the cause of the "lailed capitalism" and the "failed state". Finally, the scholar Delio Cantimori, by setting history in the centre of his academic attention and critical interpretation, weaken the idea of a conceptual connection between the Reformation and the establishment of a more evolved political and economic model.
