This article aims to fill a gap in recent scholarship regarding the theologian Johann Joachim Spalding's influence on Kant's thought. Whereas historians of theology have lately rediscovered Spalding's genuinely Christian anthropology and ethics, historians of philosophy tend to consider Spalding as one of the main sources of Kant's allegedly anti-Christian views. This paper reconstructs the theses of both authors, and comes to redress current views about the role of religion in Kant's work.

Abstract

This article aims to fill a gap in recent scholarship regarding the theologian Johann Joachim Spalding's influence on Kant's thought. Whereas historians of theology have lately rediscovered Spalding's genuinely Christian anthropology and ethics, historians of philosophy tend to consider Spalding as one of the main sources of Kant's allegedly anti-Christian views. This paper reconstructs the theses of both authors, and comes to redress current views about the role of religion in Kant's work.
