In this paper, a system level analysis of a WLAN 802.11a transmitter, oriented to assess the specification margins for a commercially off-the-shelf (COTS) PA, is presented. Two PAs are firstly modeled by using appropriate measurement and identification protocols and then co-simulated within a realistic TX-channel-RX environment. Behavioral models for other subsystems in the TX chain like, VCO and mixers are inserted, while the RX is considered ideal. Two cases of study were considered, which involve two different COTS PAs, respectively adopted to demonstrate in which way a system-level analysis would be of benefit to wireless system designers, leading to optimum linearity and efficiency tradeoffs.
