Bioclimatic architecture refers to the design based on local climate, aimed at providing on one hand thermal and visual comfort, on the other hand energy efficiency. The building is set up to make use of wind for cooling, sun for heating and lighting, and other environmental sources to meet comfort and energy demands without using Hvac system. Within such a Nearly zero energy strategy, the building provides in a passive way nearly enough energy to meet its energy requirements. Passive systems, which are basic elements of bioclimatic design and have characterized for centuries the building typologies of many geographical areas, have been rediscovered as valuable heat exchanges between the inside and the outside of the building, also as a result of recent European regulations on energy saving and the widespread global social awareness on environmental issues. For more than a decade passive systems have been investigated with the purpose of defining new solutions that allow to dynamically set the environmental building performance thanks also to innovative building materials and building management systems. Buildings are complex systems and should therefore be considered as a whole.
