The aim this thesis is to explore the potential of metabolomics in biomedical research. In this framework, due to the wide applications of NMR-based metabolomics in this field, the present thesis is divided into three main research areas, detailed below. I. “Guidelines for High Quality biological samples dedicated to NMR-Metabolomics”: one of the main investigation points of this thesis was to define guidelines for sample handling, with the final aim of obtaining high quality samples, high accuracy and reproducibility of the analysis, and the possibility of data sharing among different laboratories; II. “Human Individual Metabolic Phenotype: a promising tool to approach Precision Medicine”: In this thesis, different properties of the individual metabolic phenotype have been unravelled and characterized, such as its long-term stability and the gut microflora contribution; III. “Disease Diagnosis and Characterisation: NMR-Metabolomics of cells and tissues”: this thesis, the applicability of metabolomics as a powerful tool to obtain disease characterisation and diagnosis has been explored for pathologies such as intestinal bowel disease and some types of cancer. Samples of animal origin, and appropriate cell lines were analysed for this purpose.
