After introducing key issues in the development of thought on the subject of peace in Italy, this contribution focuses on current prospects and meanings of peace education. In particular, this article shows the origin of peace studies and research, and connections between peace education and other fields of social research considered to be within the new paradigm of the “culture of peace”. Citing Galtung’s contribution to the field, the article explains what entails “violence” and that peace education is, primarily, education regarding the methods, approaches, behaviors and tools for positive mediation and resolution of conflicts. This contribution urges reflection on daily educational practices, emphasizing that if we want to educate people to live together in peace, we need first of all to develop peace within ourselves.
