La costruzione della memoria

Il volume è dedicato ad alcune questioni prettamente compositive che riguardano il simbolismo del monumento commemorativo e la trasformazione del sito operata dal monumento eretto nel luogo dell’eccidio. Dopo un rapido excursus sull’evoluzione dell’architettura del monumento e del suo significato in epoca moderna e contemporanea, si affronta il tema della figura simbolica come matrice del progetto che determina il significato e il carattere del monumento. Si tenta anche un catalogo delle figure più ricorrenti, correlandone il significato alle implicazioni compositive e facendo riferimento a specifici esempi di architettura commemorativa del XX e XXI secolo. Infine, si indaga il potenziale semantico del luogo quando i monumenti sono eretti in situ, ovvero dove si è verificato l’evento che si vuole commemorare. Anche in questo caso le argomentazioni teoriche sono sostenute da schede critiche che circoscrivono l’analisi a monumenti realizzati da architetti italiani per ricordare fatti relativi alla seconda guerra mondiale. Pur adottando una prospettiva internazionale, l’Italia rimane infatti il terreno privilegiato d’indagine. The book is dedicated to some purely compositional issues concerning the symbolism of the memorial and the transformation of the site when the monument is built in the site of the massacre. After a brief excursus on the evolution of memorials and their meaning in the modern and contemporary times, the theme of the symbolic figure is addressed as the matrix of the design that determines the meaning and character of the monument. A catalogue of the most recurrent symbolic figures is also attempted, correlating their meaning with their compositional implications and referring to specific examples of 20th and 21st century commemorative architecture. Finally, the semantic potential of place is investigated when monuments are erected in situ. Also in this case, the theoretical arguments are supported by critical files that circumscribe the analysis to monuments built by Italian architects to commemorate events related to the Second World War. Although adopting an international perspective, Italy remains the privileged field of investigation.
