In the first work, the Due Dialoghi (1557), he privileged a literary genre common in scientific production, thus putting himself within the tradition of high culture. With the second, Duo libri (1559), he moved decisively towards the form of a modern treatise on military architecture, turning directly to engineers and officers and sharing with them topics and technical words. But he soon retrieved an international cultured extent thanks to the Latin translation of the work, which he himself would publish in 1563. Lanteri lived in a very thorny and turbulent transition period in the history of the fortification theory. The attempt to reconcile the Vitruvian precepts with those of the military architecture had definitively failed and military architecture was now separated from civil architecture. However, another divide was on the way: that between writings based on practical experience in battlefields on one side, and the modern treatises resulting from the scholarly approach on the other. Starting from his aristocratic point of view, Lanteri tried to combine these two approaches. He succeeded not only by systematically providing the readers with a lot of aids (indexes, titles of paragraphs on page margins, etc.), but especially through language. The winning element was in fact the choice of a medium ‘mezzano’ style, supported by a terminology apt to both practice and theory and by then spread throughout Italy in military and civil environments, regardless of cultural level or social class.

Abstract

------------- During seven years, between 1557 and 1563, Giacomo Lanteri published a series of important writings on military architecture.
