This paper deals with the aerodynamic behavior of the system obtained attaching an open-gap screen to a face of a two-dimensional rectangular 1:1 or 2:3 prism. When the cavity between the screen and the prism is only horizontally compartmentalized, it allows the air behind the screen to move crosswise. This flow feature influences the aerodynamics of the whole system in terms of both pressure distributions and resulting forces. It was also observed that such a screened cylinder is less prone to the galloping instability.

Abstract

This paper deals with the aerodynamic behavior of the system obtained attaching an open-gap screen to a face of a two-dimensional rectangular 1:1 or 2:3 prism. When the cavity between the screen and the prism is only horizontally compartmentalized, it allows the air behind the screen to move crosswise. This flow feature influences the aerodynamics of the whole system in terms of both pressure distributions and resulting forces. It was also observed that such a screened cylinder is less prone to the galloping instability.
