Starting from the literature review of social media usage in disasters and during weather-related events, this research investigates how codified hashtags for weather warning have been used on Twitter in Italy. Some case studies are discussed with the aim to assess if codified hashtags could represent an effective way to connect formal and informal sources of information during severe weather events. Author analyzed messages exchanged on Twitter during selected periods of time to identify the amount of information that hashtags were able to attract, to characterize the most active types of users, most used hashtags and to help messages’ content classification in order to gain insights into the type of information exchanged, in particular those contributing to situational awareness.
