Abstract

Cataloging and urban census represent a fundamental phase of analysis of systems that characterize urban reality, both architectural and technological, generating a path of deepening and knowledge of signs and codes that govern building development and determine the Image of the City. The application to a part of East Jerusalem, on the portion of Sultan Suleiman and Salah Eddin streets and the monumental cemetery of Bab Azhar, through a collaboration project between University of Pavia, University of Florence and United Nations, highlights the capability of digital systems based on census databases and G.I.S. platforms to develop interactive query and research systems for urban complexity, with simplified analysis for management and intervention plans on built heritage. From the elaboration of the results of metric and photographic survey campaigns, the decomposition of urban and monumental elements and their redefinition according to cognitive and descriptive structures generates a census-optimized action in the integration of an interactive three-dimensional cartographic G.I.S. system. The result is a “smart” virtual city model, where 3D navigation interacts with digitized data on Building Units and Urban Fronts for thematic research and action plans on architectural and urban heritage of Holy Land.
