The actions for the control of environmental noise pollution are expressed by the classification of the territory into areas characterized by homogeneous acoustic features in according to recent Italian regulations. This paper concerning the methodology used in defining the acoustic classification plans of two great Tuscan municipalities: Florence and Pistoia. In these towns and in other minor municipalities, like Monsummano, it was used the same methodology of classification, based on the analysis of different statistical parameters, such as the densities of population and human activities. From these data, taken from the general census of the Italian statistical institute, it was defined the preliminary classification plan of the towns. The final acoustical plan derived from the comparison between the preliminary plan and the presence of roads, railways and motorways, urban development planning, urban traffic plan and the actual noise climate. The paper shows the evolution of the acoustical plan of the municipalities from the preliminary analysis to the final solutions and points out some relevant aspects that need a specific treatment in the regulation of the acoustic classification plan.
