Oggi gli agrumeti sono una componente fondamentale del paesaggio mediterraneo e uno dei più importanti frutti coltivati in questa regione. Le principali specie attualmente coltivate sono: arancio dolce (C. sinensis); limone (C. limon); mandarino (C. reticulata); cedro (C. medica); arancio amaro (C. aurantium); pompelmo (C. paradisi); lime (C. aurantifolia); bergamotto (C. bergamium). La facile fecondazione intergenerica e interspecifica ha portato nel tempo alla formazione di molti ibridi di notevole interesse agronomico, che sono stati diffusi commercialmente con denominazioni fra le più varie. Tuttavia, gli agrumi non sono originari del bacino del Mediterraneo. Le tre specie ancestrali dei principali tipi di agrumi oggi diffusi sono il cedro (Citrus medica), il pomelo (C. maxima) e il mandarino (C. reticulata), e si pensa che abbiano le loro origini nell’India nord-orientale, Birmania e arcipelago malese, e che successivamente si siano disperse in altre terre nel Sud-Est asiatico, da cui poi si sono differenziati in altre specie.
