Narrare in versi

Il saggio prende in esame la varia fortuna del racconto in versi, dal Boccaccio all'età del Tasso, in uno stretto e continuo rapporto con le interagenti fortune del racconto in prosa. Uno snodo essenziale viene individuato nell'ultimo scorcio del Quattrocento, quando le 'prose di romanzi', in Italia, vengono convertite tutte in ottave; e l'ottava viene consacrata come l'unico medium espressivo della materia cavalleresca (a differenza di quanto avviene in Europa). Nel Cinquecento il saggio illustra la polarizzazione tra ottava cavalleresca e prosa di racconto 'varia', non teorizzata come il poema, ma proprio per questo più sperimentale e foriera di formati narrativi che ormai guardano verso il 'novel', non più verso il 'romance'. This essay takes into account the varying fortunes of narrative in verse, from Boccaccio to the age of Tasso, in close and continuous relationship with the interacting fortunes of narration in prose. An essential turning point is identified towards the end of the 15th century, when the 'romance proses', in Italy, are all converted into octaves; and the octave is consecrated as the only expressive medium for chivalric topics (unlike the rest of Europe). In the 16th century, the essay shows the polarization between chivalric octave and 'various' narrative prose, not theorized as with poems, but exactly because of this, more experimental and the harbinger of narrative formats which are now looking more towards the 'novel' than towards the 'romance'.
