We have characterized mitochondrial ribosomal 12S and D-Loop sequences of shads (most likely Alosa fallax) catched in two Italian rivers (Ombrone and Albegna rivers, Tuscany) during spawning-time, in springs 2002-2003. Ribosomal 12S sequences display 4 aplotypes. In D-Loops we observe some variations due to point mutations and to variable number of a tandem-repeated sequence 40 base pairs long; such tandem-repeat is also contained in the D-Loop sequence of cogeneric American A. sapidissima. The variability recovered from both the characterized sequences, 12S and D-Loop, consent to discriminate Tyrrhenian shads from other known species of Clupeidae family. The mitochondrial variability detected is scanty and unable to describe any difference correlable to the spawning basin of the samples and due to homing.
