Abstract

In the foundling hospitals, the reception of the abandoned children seems to have continued unchanged for century after century. But at the end of the XIXthC. a vast process of change began: these institutions in Italy came to be directed by doctors and became therapheutich places for the infants and the children and for the women who cared for them. This change is expecuially evident in the case of the Innocenti Foundling Hospital in Florence,. A surprisingly rich archival documentation, previously unexplored, allows to reconsider wider questions about medical treatment and maternal care, about the interactions among science, politics and mentalities. New attitudes emerged toward the children -legitimate or illegitimate- and toward the mothers -married or single-, expecially among those physicians most involved in social medicine. Monographical issue on "Children and Health in Europe 1750-2000", ed. by P. Guarnieri. Authors : E. Becchi, A. Davin, N. De Coninck, P. Guarnieri, C. Rollet; launguages: Eng., It., French
