The discovery of leptin in 1994 represented a tremendous breakthrough in the field of obesity and the regulation of energy balance. A system providing a circulating signal of satiety was hypothesized since the discovery of monogenic syndromes in mice with obesity and hyperphagia.Liver fibrosis should now be added to the list of conditions in which leptin plays a crucial role, based on recent evidence obtained in the laboratory of Nobuhiro Sato in Japan.
