An experimental technique, with which independent scores of orientation can be obtained for single specimens, confirms the existence of an innate directional tendency in the solar orientation of littoral amphipods (Talitrus salator Montagu) which varies according to the disposition of the home beach of each population. Correct orientation persists even in the offspring of parents born in captivity. The inheritance of sun orientation was confirmed in different populations from Mediterranean beaches. The orientation of individuals of the first and second laboratory generations was compared with that of adults collected in nature.

Abstract
An experimental technique, with which independent scores of orientation can be obtained for single specimens, confirms the existence of an innate directional tendency in the solar orientation of littoral amphipods (Talitrus salator Montagu) which varies according to the disposition of the home beach of each population. Correct orientation persists even in the offspring of parents born in captivity. The inheritance of sun orientation was confirmed in different populations from Mediterranean beaches. The orientation of individuals of the first and second laboratory generations was compared with that of adults collected in nature.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
