27 detailed sedimentological sections (6000 m thick as a whole) were measured along the Alpe di Catenaia (Arezzo)-Lago Trasimeno alignment in the Late Oligocene-Early/Middle Miocene siliciclastic turbidites (M. Falterone Sandstones-Mugello Formation) of the M. Cervarola-M. Falterona thrust sheet, belonging to the Tuscan Domain. The M. Falterona Sandstones-Mugello Formation succession overlies foreland ramp to basinal sediments (Scisti Varicolori Auct.) and is overriden by hemipelagic marly sediments (Vicchio Marls Auct.). The analysis of stratimetric data points out five main lithofacies (=turbidite facies associations), distinguished by lithological-sedimentological features during the field survey, which are everywhere regularly superimposed in ascending stratigraphic order. The lowermost three lithofacies are represented by arenaceous and arenaceous-pelitic sediments and are referable to the M. Falterona Sandstones (Late Oligocene-Aquitanian), while the mainly pelitic-arenaceous uppermost two are attributed to the Mugello Formation (=Macigno del Mugello; Formazione di Londa or Cervarola Sandstones Auct.) (Aquitanian).
