The innovative signalling and control systems for railway traffic about to be installed all over Europe makes use of information regarding the speed and position of the train on the line. The odometric on-board system which provides such information therefore becomes of fundamental importance for safe circulation. Trenitalia has therefore, with the collaboration of the University of Florence, designed and produced a test rig to try out and check experimentally both the reliability and accuracy of odometry in conditions of extreme use (slipping and sliding caused by the degraded adhesion).
