Many authors (Van Ittersum e Scholte, 1992; Leclerc et al., 1995; Coleman et al., 2001; Donnelly et al., 2003) have demonstrated that microtubers are similar to the conventional ones as regard their structure, metabolic processes, enzymatic activity, biochemical composition, hormone effect and physiological answer to environmental changes. Therefore the in vitro systems could represent a valid instrument to investigate physiological behaviour of potato genotypes. Microtuber dormancy is affected by environmental conditions both during their development and during their storage. Physiological performance is achieved during growing season, while ageing is acquired during storage. Both of them are genotype dependent and they are deeply affected by both temperature and length of the corresponding period. Each tuber differs from the others concerning its physiological performance since each one has a different age. Preliminary indication were presented at 2002 Triennial Conference of EAPR in Hamburg.
