We define “Wigner envelope functions” as the Wigner transform of density matrices built from Wannier–Slater envelope functions. Starting from this definition, it is possible to write Wigner-like effective-mass, multi-band equations which describe the transport of electron in semiconductor heterostructures. The well-posedness of initial value problems for such equations is discussed.
