The paper draws an in-deep comparison between Japanese and Italian welfare regimes in their connections with wider society and familistic culture: even if the way in which the welfare systems of the two countries are embedded in the complex relationship between state, market and the informal sector may seem very similar - and in both cases is misunderstood if read in simple terms of traditionalism – The Japanese welfare regime is still more correctly read as a Liberal welfare regime than a Mediterranean one.
