Abstract

********* The study starts from the idea of the new continent as an empty space to be filled in, both physically and culturally: a continent at which Europe gazes as if at a child and at the same time as at a future opportunity. After a short examination of the commonplaces and stereotypes that are being formed of America in the European imagination, we pass to consider how these stereotypes are gradually utilised by Italian writers and journalists. Lastly, we stop at the 1930s, criss-crossing the testimonies of three extraordinary travellers and men of letters: Cecchi, Soldati and Borgese, who at times seem almost to answer each other at a distance.
