The release behaviour of theophylline from hydrophilic matrix tablets with two different drug:polymer ratios and four different weights and dimensions was investigated. The correlation found betwwen the exposed tablet area and the amount of drug released with time allowed the prediction of curves of drug release rate from commercial controlled-release tablets. Good correlation was found between theoretical and experimental release curves.
