Il primato assoluto (cronologico e qualitativo) dello spettacolo fiorentino nel panorama del teatro moderno è inconfutabile e viene generalmente considerato come acquisito intorno agli anni trenta del Cinquecento. Insieme alla strumentalizzazione a fini politici da parte del governo mediceo è però parte costitutiva di questo primato la grande competenza tecnico - macchinistica che consentirà proprio a Firenze la creazione del modello di teatro cosiddetto all’italiana, impiantato poi nelle grandi capitali europee proprio da artisti “prestati” dall’intendenza medicea. Da dove deriva questa grande capacità tecnologica? Il saggio, prendendo ad esempio una “machina” fondamentale nella creazione dell’illusionismo macchinistico e cioè la Nuvola, rintraccia già nelle feste religiose delle chiese d’ Oltrarno (con testimonianze che paiono ragionevolmente far risalire i primi esempi alla fine del Duecento) le prime prove d’uso di un’embrionale macchina ascensionale. Perfezionata nel corso del tempo con un uso che diventa tradizione la macchina, fino agli inizi del Cinquecento appannaggio delle Sacre rappresentazioni, diverrà il supporto (dimostrando quindi il netto primato della tecnologia sulla drammaturgia) per il grande spettacolo di corte quando, nel chiuso dei teatri, le nuvole, dopo aver sostenuto schiere innumerevoli di Angeli, Santi, Pantocrati e Creatori, sosterranno i grandi consessi olimpici di uno spettacolo che avrà nel “banchetto degli dei” la sua più clamorosa manifestazione spettacolare. Il saggio, attraverso un ricco excursus iconografico affronta anche il problema, particolarmente fecondo in questo esempio, del rapporto tra teatro ed arti figurative non solo dal punto di vista delle interferenze biografiche (ad es. le testimonianze dell’impiego di Masolino e Masaccio per gli apparati delle nuvole) ma anche dal punto di vista metodologico esaminando le reciproche solidarietà disciplinari. The absolute supremacy (chronological and qualitative) of the Florentine spectacle in the landscape of modern theatre is by now accomplished and generally taken for acquired around the first thirty years of the Sixteenth century. Along with the exploitation for political purposes by the Medici government, the great technical competence is an essential part of this predominance, which will allow in Florence the creation of the so-called Italian model of theatre, then implanted in the great European capitals thanks to those artists ‘lent’ by the Medici family. Where does this great ability come from? This essay, by taking as example the Cloud, a particular and fundamental ‘machine’ in the creation of the illusionism on the stage, tracks already in the religious festivals of the Oltrarno churches’ the first evidence of the use of an embryonic upward device. Improved with the passing of time by a use then become tradition, the Cloud, until the early Sixteenth century an exclusive prerogative of sacred representations, will become the base for the greatest court entertainments (thus demonstrating the clear primacy of technology on dramaturgy) when, inside the theatres, the clouds will support a wide range of Olympic gods and goddess (after having held angels, saints and creators), a model which will have in the ‘banquet of the gods’ its most sensational spectacular expression. The essay, through a rich iconographic excursus, also faces the problem of the relationship between theatre and visual arts, not only in terms of biographical interference (such as the assignment of Masolino and Masaccio for the creation of the clouds) but also from the methodological point of view by examining the reciprocal disciplinary exchanges.
