Solid dispersions of ibuprofen in polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400, 6000, and 20000 were obtained by the solvent and the melting methods. The drug was stable and did not decompose during the solid dispersion preparation. The "solidified melts" showed a greater increase in drug dissolution rate than the corresponding coevaporated systems. A slight enhancement in drug dissolution rate was found with increasing the PEG molecular weight. The storage of solid dispersions did not influence the drug dissolution behavior.

Abstract

Solid dispersions of ibuprofen in polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400, 6000, and 20000 were obtained by the solvent and the melting methods. The drug was stable and did not decompose during the solid dispersion preparation. The "solidified melts" showed a greater increase in drug dissolution rate than the corresponding coevaporated systems. A slight enhancement in drug dissolution rate was found with increasing the PEG molecular weight. The storage of solid dispersions did not influence the drug dissolution behavior.
