The synthesis, characterization and some ligational properties of the three giant-size azamacrocycles: 4,31-dimethyl-1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22,25,28,31,34,37,40,43,46,49,52-octadecazatricyclo[50.2.2. 2.2.27(7,10,25,28,34,37)]tetrapentacontane, L1, 4,34-dimethyl-1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22,25,28,31,34,37,40,43,46,49,52,55, 58-eicosazatricyclo[56.2.2.2.2.2(7,10,25,28,34,37,40)]hexacontane, L2, and 4,37-dimethyl-1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22,25, 28,31,34,37,40,43,46,49,52,55,58,61,64-docosazatricyclo[62.2.2.2.2.2(7,10,25,28,34,37,40,43)]hexahexacontane, L3, are reported. These ligands present 54-, 60- and 66-membered macrocyclic frameworks, respectively. Crystals of the compound [Cd-2(H(2)L2)][ClO4](6) . 5H(2)O are monoclinic, space group P2(1)/c, with a = 19.173(1) Angstrom, b = 9.667(2) Angstrom, c = 23.561(2) Angstrom, beta = 109.81(1)degrees, and Z = 2. Refinement of the atomic parameters by least squares on F gave a final R factor of 0.067 (R(w)=0.067) for 3767 unique reflections with I > 3 sigma(1). The structure consists of binuclear diprotonated [Cd(2)H(2)L2](6+) cations, which lie around a crystallographic inversion centre, perchlorate anions and lattice water molecules. Spectrophotometric measurements indicate that L3 can coordinate up to five Cu(II) ions.
