XV). The study is dedicated to the conception of matter developed by Albert the Great in theological works and commentaries of the works of Aristotle. Albert’s main thesis consists of attributing to matter a sort of actuality: for Albert matter is therefore distinct from a simple relation with the form, and irreducible to it. A second distinction follows from the first one: the distinction between the essence of matter and potency. Stating that matter is not simply equivalent to potency, but it has its own essence, was a remarkable shift from the aristotelian paradigm. In this perspective, Albert’s theory of matter has some points of intersection with the thought of Bonaventure of Bagnoregio, while remaining distinct from that of Thomas Aquinas which defines matter in an aristotelian way, as pure potency. In the final section of this book, we studied the influence of Albert’s thesis about matter in the debate around the notion of matter that developed around 1270s, between Siger of Brabant, Boethius of Dacia and the anonymous of Leipzig (ms. 1386 University Library, q. XV).

Abstract

XV). The study is dedicated to the conception of matter developed by Albert the Great in theological works and commentaries of the works of Aristotle.
