Abstract

The paper investigates the economic functions of the capitalist social firm. To this purpose we develop an extension of Hansmann’s theory of non-profit firms that is applicable to firms that are not controlled by patrons, like those we are concerned with here. The analysis uncovers the conditions under donor-owned non-profits organizational forms are efficient for non-profit enterprises. Finally, we ask in which sectors their emergence is more likely with main reference to Italy.
