Mast cells are characterized by specific secretion granules, which contain histamine, glycosaminoglycans, enzymes and peptide mediators. These cells secrete also several cytokines, lipid mediators and nitric oxide. Two types of mast cells, which may be recognized on the basis of the staining and neutral protease content of granules, differ from each other for localization, secretory products and response to chemicals. Both cell types derive from bone marrow precursors and achieve terminal differentiation within connective tissue. They are correlated with, but distinct from, blood basophils. Mast cells can be triggered to secrete their products by immunological and extraimmunological stimuli and play a role in regulating both, the calibre and permeability of vessels and the recruitment, differentiation and function of several cell types involved in inflammatory processes. Several reports agree that mast cells are increased in numbers within and around skin tumours. These cells are suspected to favour tumour progression and diffusion because of the angiogenetic and proteolytic activities of their secretory products. It is also possible that mast cells contribute to defend the host against tumours, because they may act as natural killer cells and may stimulate immune responses against cancer.
