This article describes a possible role for information theory in risk assessment and management. A method for risk assessment using information entropy (also risk entropy method, REM) is proposed. The calculation of the safety and technical risks of the building construction process was based on Shannon’s entropy modifying the commonly used management and assessment methods (FMEA/FMECA). The proposed method uses a true rational criterion for decision making and safety management and has a strong influence on risk control capacity). A case study was conducted in Florence (Italy) and results obtained by different methods were compared.

Abstract

This article describes a possible role for information theory in risk assessment and management. A method for risk assessment using information entropy (also risk entropy method, REM) is proposed. The calculation of the safety and technical risks of the building construction process was based on Shannon’s entropy modifying the commonly used management and assessment methods (FMEA/FMECA). The proposed method uses a true rational criterion for decision making and safety management and has a strong influence on risk control capacity). A case study was conducted in Florence (Italy) and results obtained by different methods were compared.
