During recent excavations in the Church of S. Maria del Lavello, some archaeological remains were found. These relate to previous layouts of the architectural complex and provide evidence as to how the building evolved. A new floor has been planned to ensure the continued liturgical use of the church. As the archaeological discoveries will be largely hidden by the floating structure of the new floor they were carefully surveyed using a laser scanning system. The 3D model thus obtained was used for documenting the structures and for obtaining geometric information pertaining to planning choices. Further data processing resulted in a surface model that could be usefully applied in the entertainment and exhibitory fields. Other uses were evaluated in the development of a communication project showing the evolution of the architectural complex: - a virtual model texturized with digital photos: the high detailed model was used as a reference to extract control point, so the photos can be oriented and then projected onto the model itself; - a reduced-scale exhibitive model, created using rapid prototyping systems: a physical model obtained in this way can be used without the intermediation of data processing systems which increases the number of potential users; - virtual models, showing reconstructive hypotheses that could be advanced in the archaeological, textual and iconographic documentation.
