This essay goes into the relation between the theoretical and tragic work of Gravina and that of Metastasio, starting from the youthful tragedy Giustino, where the young disciple moves away from the strict classical principles of his master to access – though with great caution – a typology already tending towards melodrama. The persistence of Gravina's teachings can be found in the figure of the wise Cleone, while the love stories, the changes of scene and the markedly pathetic fourth act anticipate Metastasio's next melodramatic choice which he - measuring himself against the theoresis of his master – sees as a modern approach to classic tragedy.
