The distribution and size of Komodo dragon populations are, in fact, being affected by a number of human-related threats. Poaching of deer (Cervus timorensis), the main prey species, is frequently recorded on Flores Island and in Komodo National Park and represents a factor that may lead to a reduction of prey availability for adults. Similarly, on Flores, habitat fragmentation by slash-and-burn agriculture and arson represents a significant threat to the persistence of extant populations. When these negative factors are considered, information on specific population biology parameters is of great importance for programs focused on defining the relationship between wildlife space use and future land and prey species management practices. In this study, we examine current distribution and describe adult home range size and structure and provide a preliminary description of activity patterns and habitat use as assessed by radiotelemetry techniques.
