Nine microsatellite primers were developed to analyse the extent of genetic variability and degree of gene flow in Komodo National Park and the island of Flores. This information is important for management of extant Komodo dragon populations, particularly in the identification of distinctive genetic units that may provide the source material for augmentation and reintroduction programs.

Abstract

As part of a conservation genetics survey of Komodo dragons in Indonesia, samples were collected from a total of 78 wild specimens.
