Il saggio esamina l’intreccio tra idee filosofiche e scientifiche intorno alla natura dell’anima e alle funzioni dei nervi e in particolare del cervello che caratterizza una larga parte della cultura tedesca dell’età romantica. È un intreccio in cui prospettive decisamente materialistiche si trovano a scontrarsi con visioni d’impianto contrario, ferme nella convinzione del carattere di essenza immortale da riconoscere all’anima. Ma sono molte anche le posizioni più problematiche, in special modo quelle degli scienziati e dei medici impegnati nello studio delle patologie della psiche. Il quadro che risulta così possibile delineare è denso anche di importanti stimoli per la storia della cultura letteraria dell’età romantica. The paper deals with the philosophical and scientific ideas underlying the German debate during the Age of Romanticism about the soul and the latter’s relationship with the body, i.e. with the nervous functions in general and the brain in particular. One has to take into account the struggle the traditional view of the soul’s immortality is fighting against the frankly outspoken materialism of a lot of scientifically minded physicians. At the same time it is also true that the study of the mental illness seems to move to a more problematic view of the mind-body (or soul-brain) relationship. The outline it is possible to sketch is very interesting as well from the point of view of the history of German romantic literature.
