LEISURE AS THE PURPUSE OF WORK

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The transformations that have affected the character of paid work for at least the last three decades under the impact of the “third industrial revolution”, along with the associated processes of globalization, demand that we rethink both the idea of work and the idea of leisure. It is necessary to move beyond the specific opposition between work time e time “free” of work as it was defined and established by the character of work in the twentieth century. The post-Fordism form of work allows us to glimpse a previously unsuspected degree of freedom,, responsability, and personal creativity that can be related in a positive and reciprocal manner with the notion of leisure, here understood in terms of intellectual and cultural enhancement rather than simply in terms of diversion, entrertainement or mass consumption. In this sense, leisure can become one of the purpuses of work and not merery a flight from the sphere of work. ITALIAN ABSTRACT: Le trasformazioni cui il lavoro subordinato è sottoposto da almeno da tre decenni sotto la spinta della “terza rivoluzione industriale” ed i processi di globalizzazione richiedono di ripensare sia l’idea di lavoro, sia l’idea di ozio. Occorre andare oltre la contrapposizione tra tempo di lavoro e tempo libero dal lavoro stabilita dal lavoro novecentesco. Nella forma postfordista del lavoro si registra un’inedita libertà, responsabilità, creatività della persona che può riconnettersi positivamente e circolarmente con l’ozio, inteso come elevazione spirituale e non semplicemente come consumo e divertimento di massa. In questo senso l’ozio può divenire un compito del lavoro e non semplicemente una fuga dal lavoro.
