Abstract

In an attempt to formulate answers more relevant to the mental suffering of adolescents, it becomes apparent through the National and International scientific literature, the criticality of addressing through therapy this acute mental condition. In this paper, we reflect on the experience of constructing a combined network approach, integrating Hospital/ University services (Pediatric Neuropsychiatry, Pediatrics) with more local services (Functional Infant/ Adolescent Units), focusing the activities that facilitate a rapid and intense response by consolidating the initial activity of the Emergency Admissions Department and an eventual hospital stay in a Pediatric Neuropsychiatric ward with specialist consultants, plus the creation of a Pediatric Neuropsychiatric out-patients department for the multidimensional intensive treatment of this acute mental condition. The methodological framework is represented by the need to construct working models of this type of quick response therapy that are flexible and can be personalized and furthermore incorporated at an early stage with a subsequent therapy project at a local level. The elaboration of the diagnostic overview of this acute mental condition in respect of the nosographic diagnosis and dimension of the mental imbalance of the adolescent, by analyzing case histories carried out in 2008-2009 for acute psychiatric symptoms by the Pediatric Neuropsychiatry department of the Departmental Organization Structure of the University Hospital Careggi in Florence, in varying forms of rapid response and intensive intervention: consultations (at the Emergency Admissions Department and Pediatric Ward of the University Hospital Meyer in Florence) out patients department (specialized out-patients department for adolescents) of the Pediatric Neuropsychiatric ward of the Meyer Hospital, Florence; hospital care (admission, day hospital) at the Pediatric Neuropsychiatric ward of the Careggi Hospital, Florence. The comprehensive significance of the intervention is analyzed based on indicators relative to the number of multiple hospital admittances at the Emergency Admissions Department, the amalgamation of local services and the pertinence of the psychiatric diagnosis as regards the acute symptomatology.
