STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM According to Davis, Generalized Pathological Internet Use (GPIU) involves a general, multidimensional overuse of the Internet (rather overuse or abuse of content-specific functions) related to the unique communicative context of the Internet. Caplan (2002) developed a 29-item scale (GPIUS) to operationalize Davis’s theoretical construct. A factor analysis identified seven unique sub-dimensions, that together accounted for 68% of the variance, including: mood alteration, social benefits, negative outcomes, compulsive Internet use, excessive time online, withdrawal, and perceived social control. The seven subscales demonstrated high internal consistency, with Chronbach’s coefficients ranging from 0.78 to 0.85. The present study aimed to investigate the basic psychometric properties of the GPIUS in an Italian nonclinical sample. PARTICIPANTS.195 volunteer subjects (M=45; F=150) recruited at Florence University. Ages ranged from 18 to 34 years (M=24,60±2,26). PROCEDURE. The Italian translation was developed by bilingual psychologists. Back translation was conducted. The final version was tested in a pilot study including 15 consecutive adult; for each question, comprehensibility was checked. In accordance with the American version, exploratory factor analysis (Rotation Method: Oblimin with Kaiser Normalization) was performed. Parallel analysis was also conducted. Internal consistency was evaluated using the Cronbach's alpha formula. RESULTS. Internal consistency was high in all domains (ranging from 0.75 to 0.91). In accordance with Caplan (2002), the 29 GPIU items yielded seven factors that, together, accounted for 70.36% of the variance. Parallel analysis support the seven factor solution: however the original solution was partially replicated since two factors are underrepresented. CONCLUSIONS An Italian version of the GPIUS and a preliminary examination of its psychometric properties were proposed. Internal consistency was high in all domains and the factorial solution obtained have a comparable structure to that of the original scale. However, two factors are underrepresented. GPIUS psychometric properties need to be further studied with larger samples and more sex balanced groups.
