The article stresses the importance of empirical research in Geography, if guided by solid cognitive models. Basing on David Harvey's comments to Richard Hartshorne, the author states that Geography should focus on relevant properties of phenomena, but that in few cases we can detect them simply analyzing spatial patterns. The boundaries between human geography and other social sciences are difficult to define, but geography will be able to produce relevant scientific models only abandoning the conviction to be a very specific kind of knowledge

Abstract

The article stresses the importance of empirical research in Geography, if guided by solid cognitive models. Basing on David Harvey's comments to Richard Hartshorne, the author states that Geography should focus on relevant properties of phenomena, but that in few cases we can detect them simply analyzing spatial patterns. The boundaries between human geography and other social sciences are difficult to define, but geography will be able to produce relevant scientific models only abandoning the conviction to be a very specific kind of knowledge
