This paper is concerned with evaluating radar performance when antenna polarization is controlled, so as to improve the ratio of the target signal power to the unwanted signal power. Three different cases of unwanted signals are considered: back¬ground noise, rain clutter and intentional interference (jamming). In the first case the improvement in detecting targets in the presence of background white Gaussian noise is evaluated when adapting transmit and/ or receipt polarization to the target polarization properties. For this purpose a suitable analytical target model is devised which accounts for the dependence of echo. strength and fluctuation from polarization. Explicit formulae of the target detection probability are thus derived as a function of target parameters. With reference to some particular target parameters some numerical results are shown which evidence the improvement obtainable when controlling antenna polarization at transmit and/or receipt.
