This volume describes Italy’s legislative regime on environmental protection, updated through 31 December 2010. The description of the legal system and the social-economic characteristics of the Italian situation are limited to summary considerations, with some references to the most common issues of constitutional law and prospects of institutional reform already in course. The description of the regulation of the individual sectors considers the most recent laws implementing European Community regulations and directives, which constitute the backbone of the legal system regarding environmental protection. Given recent innovations, the individual chapters almost always illustrate the regime that was in effect up until recently, which it is still essential to know for the proper application of the most recent laws. The volume is the result of the common work of all of the authors. The introduction and chapters on general law, zoning and land-use planning, and juridical action of individuals were prepared by Stefano Grassi, who directed the entire project. The chapters on water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, radiation, land reclamation, waste management and landscape were prepared by Antonio Borzì; the chapters on major accident risks and noise pollution were prepared by Marcello Cecchetti; the chapter on water resource management and soil conservation was prepared jointly by Antonio Borzì and Marcello Cecchetti; the chapters on protected areas, biodiversity, wetlands, sea protection and mining activity were prepared by Alessandro Andronio, and the chapter on liability questions was prepared by Gianni Taddei. The preparation of the English text, which involved the general coordination and revision of the entire volume, was done by Andrea L. Davis. Environmental Law – Suppl. 79 (November 2011) Italy – 19
