ABSTRACT As prescribed by European (EC8) and Italian building codes (NTC08), ground motion amplification, if related to a reference seismic motion that was defined on firm soil and in free field condition, can be accounted for by using simplified procedures. In special cases (eg strategically important buildings, detailed seismic microzonation for liquefaction or landslide hazard evaluation, etc.) more complex numerical analyses can be requested and, at times, they can reveal significant differences between expected (as prescribed by building codes) and calculated seismic motion. In the paper, results of 1-D numerical seismic response analyses for an area located in the Northern Apennine (Italy) are presented. The studied area has an extension of about 2.6 km and it is characterized by a considerable landslide susceptibility also in static conditions as evidenced by a number of surveys carried out over the past years. Local seismic response analyses were then included within a microzonation study for landslide hazard estimation and the predicted seismic motion at the slope surface was critically interpreted in the light of EC8 and NTC08 prescriptions for the corresponding soil classes in terms of amplification factors and response spectra.
