The National Catalogue of Historical Rural Landscape is an interdisciplinary research carried out by 74 researchers belonging to 14 Italian Universities and two international institutions, concerning the identification of historical rural landscapes in the Italian territory, coordinated by the author. The research was promoted by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry in the framework of the activities developed by the Working Group “Landscape”, as a result of the definition of landscape as a strategic objective of Italian agriculture. The concept of historical rural landscapes refers to an “interdisciplinary characterization of rural life involving economic and social history, linguistic archeology , art history and ecological studies. The research has selected about 140 areas according to criteria of significance, integrity but also describing the vulnerability of the landscapes surveyed. The data collected shows the presence of landscapes originated during a period ranging from the 8th century b.C. to the 20th century, when industrialized agriculture started in Italy. The problems of their conservation are due not only to industrialization and urbanization, but also to the increasing extension of forest land due to the abandonment. This led to the degradation of complex landscape mosaics made by mixed cultivation, pasturelands, cultural forest types, and the creation of homogeneous and monotonous landscapes, with a low biodiversity due to the simplification of landscape patterns. Abandonment happens most of all in the protected areas where the areas surveyed are located. The valorization of the landscapes surveyed by the Catalogue has already started, by providing funding to the Italian Regions for the Rural Development Plans and also enhancing new laws concerning rural landscapes.
