During the fascist period, several public buildings were realized in Italy. These constructions were designed to transmit an exterior image of magnificence and firmness, consistent with the greatness idea of the political regime. Most of them were built within areas characterized by a significant seismic risk, therefore seismic vulnerability assessment of this building heritage is a primary issue for our country. For this reason a research has been carried out to evaluate seismic behaviour of a structure which is a typical example of the building class described above: the “Palazzo degli Uffici Statali”, realized in Forlì, central Italy, in the thirties. The investigated structure is the corner body of a much wider RC building complex. It consists of a basement and six storeys in elevation, with an overall configuration characterized by a non-uniform stiffness distribution both in plan and in height. Numerical analysis consisted of two phases: a preliminary vulnerability analysis, performed according to conventional procedures of the current Italian technical regulations, followed by a non-linear dynamic analysis based on a seismic input consistent with characteristics of the building site. Obtained results pointed out significant torsional modes caused by the irregular stiffness distribution as well as shear problems due to inadequacy of transverse reinforcement.
