Abstract

Difficulties in the naming and recognition of grape germplasm remains a hard task due to the number of varieties described, with many synonymous and clonal differences within the same named cultivar. A limited scale geographical study of the main cultivars will be a first step forward in applying a classification procedure for the most important Mediterranean wine producing regions. In this subject review, eight microsatellite locus (VVS2, VVS4, VVS29, VVMD6, VVMD7, VVMD17, VVMD21 and VVMD24), Elliptic Fourier and fractal parameters were used to distinguish among five grape varieties (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivated in the region of Campania, one of the richest areas in autochthonous vine varieties. Level of similarity, possible homonyms and synonyms in ordering the cultivars have been analyzed using cluster analysis. Both techniques distinguished exactly the five varieties and confirmed their identity. All cultivars can be divided into two groups, that of Sangiovese and that of the Campania varieties. Among the Campania varieties, the accessions cluster in different way when using molecular or morphological data, suggesting caution in the application of both and that the integration of several assays could be the correct solution
